AJA Award Winners - Valor Award

“Due to Deputy First Class Kalendek’s situational awareness, swift response, and heroic action, he saved the life of a corrections officer who was being assaulted and strangled by an inmate.”

David Kalendek currently works in the Harford County Detention Center as a Deputy First Class with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office in Bel Air, Maryland. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from the University of Baltimore in June 2017 before beginning his career in corrections in July 2018.

In addition to his regular duties, he is a member of the Detention Center’s Correctional Response Team (CRT) and is a Field Training Officer. Deputy First Class Kalendek has responded to numerous critical incidents as a CRT Operator, but none have compared to the severity and viciousness of this incident. Deputy First Class Kalendek’s situational awareness, swift response, and heroic actions aided in saving his colleague's life.

Deputy First Class Kalendek looks forward to his continuing career in corrections and the opportunity to improve the detention center for his coworkers and the inmate population. His abilities were recognized by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office when he was given the Critical Incident Award.

He currently lives in the community he serves with his wife and cats.
