At Bob Barker Company, we are proud to work with inspiring customers like Sheriff Donna Buckley of Barnstable County. Since taking office, Sheriff Buckley has made it a priority to connect the detention center with the wider community. “A lot of the time, sheriff's offices are pretty much isolated, but the jail is full of people who are from our community, and people who are coming back to our community, and it’s full of family members, friends, relatives, and employees,” she said.
Barnstable County offers several programs to help support incarcerated individuals, even beyond their time spent in incarceration. “Our responsibility as sheriffs is to make sure that we have the most optimal circumstances for people to be successful when they move on,” Sheriff Buckley shared. She believes the process of successful reentry begins as soon as someone enters the system, which is why she has implemented a new case management model since taking office. She has also placed emphasis on addressing women’s programming, as she believes this is particularly impactful in reducing generational incarceration and caring for the dependents of women in custody.
Recently, Barnstable County opened a post-release support facility which provides resources and support to any justice-involved individual. All of this work ties back to Sheriff Buckley’s commitment to public safety and connecting the community. “If we as a community, are putting people in incarceration, then it's our responsibility to make sure that they can move on from that. Otherwise, we continue to punish people after they're released. So, the community has a role in the work that we do, and everything that we do is designed to make sure that we keep that connection.”
For Sheriff Buckley, the impact of her work is undeniable. “Coming to work every day knowing that you have the ability to positively impact someone’s life is such a gift,” she noted. Sheriff Buckley also emphasized the importance of providing incarcerated individuals with the supplies they need. “The conditions of confinement matter, and the more inhumane and difficult they are, the more difficult it is for people to think about how to move forward,” she said.
